TRANSITION FROM BANKING TO EDUCATION SECTOR
Can you introduce yourself to us?
I was born in Zonguldak province in March 1979. We are from the Western Black Sea. We are Kastamonu from the father. Our mother is from Zonguldak. We are three brothers. Each of the three brothers is engaged in separate jobs. My sister is engaged in textile business. My brother is dealing with the printing business. I was working in the banking sector before, but now I have decided to continue my career in the education sector.
A PERFECT CAREER
Can you talk about your education life?
Although I started my education life in Zonguldak for a short time, we had to settle in Istanbul when my father was a teacher and his appointment came to Istanbul. Thus, I completed my education in Eyüp Sultan in Istanbul. I completed my higher education again in Istanbul Marmara University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Business Administration. I did my graduate and doctorate education, in other words, in my academic career, in financial department. I also served as the head of banking at a university afterwards.
THE STORY OF THE CYPRUS ADVENTURE
How did your path cross with Cyprus?
I came to Cyprus for the first time in 2005 for holiday. We were very happy during the holidays I spent with my family at that time, we liked it very much. Cyprus will remain somewhere in my mind. As I said before, I have been operating in the banking sector for a long time. Then, after completing my university education, when I received a job offer from Nişantaşı University in 2015, I found myself in the education sector. For this reason, I decided to leave the banking sector and continue with education. Then, in 2015, I was with Cyprus President of the Board of Trustees of Nişantaşı University Levent Uysal Bey. We were very impressed by the higher education in Cyprus and the education system here. Previously, we had some research on this subject. After coming to Cyprus that year and meeting with the Ministry of Education, we decided to invest in the education sector in Cyprus and my adventure in Cyprus started.
WE LOVE THE CYPRUS VERY ”
How is life in Cyprus? How do you find TRNC?
We love Cyprus very much. Its nature and warmth are very nice to people. There is an uneventful and calm life style here. Having honest and loyal friends here connects us more to the island. In addition to the loyalty of love and respect of the people of the country, the high rate of education and literacy gives us peace and happiness. We are also very happy that our children are educated in such a warm environment and education in the country.
“OUR PROJECTS ARE GROWING MORE AND DOWNLOADING AS THE DAY PASSES.”
What are the goals of your university as the Secretary General of the University of Cyprus Health and Social Sciences?
In September 2015, we laid the foundations of the university. We completed many of the investments in 2016 as well. I believe that Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University crowned Güzelyurt. As can be understood from our name, our understanding of education at the university is more focused on health sciences. We continue with our education activities in our university in a closed area of approximately 20 thousand square meters under the name of faculty of social and humanities, school of health, school of physical education, vocational school of health services, English preparatory school, distance education center. We have girls and boys dormitories that we have rented to the Kredi Yurtlar institution, which is located on the campus of our university. These accommodate nearly three thousand students. With the support we have received from the state and non-governmental organizations in the surrounding area for four and a half years of our existence in this campus, and with our collaboration and projects with them, we are growing day by day and moving forward.
“OUR POLICY IS NOT QUANTİTY OF STUDENT, BUT QUALITY STUDENT”
As you just said, the university really crowned Güzelyurt. It is not overlooked that a liveliness has come to the city and that the population is rejuvenating. As a TRNC, while I would like to thank the authorities for these initiatives, can I learn your opinions and thoughts on this matter?
Güzelyurt is a place to development and it also makes us happy to contribute to its development in the field of education as a university. The education policy of our university is to train high quality students rather than admitting too many students. We prefer students who will get serious education. We are very sure of that. Our number is not very high, but our students are qualified. Our teaching staff is very good. As such, motivation is increasing both in our students and faculty. It is very nice to give education in a happy peaceful education institution, in a happy peaceful city with happy teachers and students.
“A PEACEFUL COMPETITION ACCORDING TO OTHER CITIES”
How do you find Güzelyurt?
Güzelyurt was once intact like other campuses. It is a magnificent city with a beautiful weather and untouched nature. Since the region is already a citrus field, it has a peaceful structure with plenty of oxygen, and naturally it is reflected in this university and all of us. Although it came to the agenda that it will be given to the Greek side many times before, the investments made and the visible growth refute this idea. Now the people of the region have embraced their cities and they continue to invest in cooperation with Güzelyurt. Of course, universities have a huge impact on this situation. This place is intact … I hope it will continue to protect itself in such a beautiful way, “What is the problem in Güzelyurt?” If you ask; I call the bleeding wound “transportation problem”, which is the most common problem of not only Güzelyurt but also the island. However, the related issue is in a much worse situation in the Güzelyurt region. We do not find any means to go to regional accidents in Nicosia, Kyrenia after seven or eight in the evening. Our students are very complaining about this, apart from that, Güzelyurt is a more affordable and peaceful campus compared to other cities and it is a suitable place for the university.
“I BELIEVE THAT OUR HOSPITAL WILL BE GIVEN TO OUR CITY IN A SHORT TIME”
Institutions such as a university, hospital give life to a city, it is the symbol of the city’s development. Especially if this hospital is located in front of a university that provides health education, it will be very advantageous for both institutions. Unfortunately, now there is an unfinished hospital that starts quickly right across from the university but does not reach some kind of result? What will you say about this?
We were very happy on the day the hospital foundation was laid. Groundbreaking ceremony was held about two years ago at the beginning of 2017 and the Motherland Turkey’s contributions to both countries’ initiatives had become today’s result. However, it stopped and it is now being held. This is a matter of vision and I believe that our hospital will be brought to our city as soon as possible after a good relationship and a healthy dialogue.
